Leveraging Friendships for Business…Is it Wrong?

March 31, 2009

Several of my friends work for corporations such as Radiant Systems, Softchoice, Philips, MEAG, First Data, CBeyond, etc. My question is – is it wrong to ask them for business contacts? If you can’t ask your friends for business, who can you ask?

I personally feel uncomfortable asking them to pass along their internal Marketing, Events, or Communications contacts. Here is one idea I had: A campaign entitled “I’d Love to Work with My Friends.” A no-pressure, friendly message that will list out in basic terms:

What I do:
Who I want to work with:
How you can help:

I would send it out via LinkedIn, FaceBook, and email. If I knew exactly how I could help make my friends be more professionally successful, I would. I would love to hear any ideas about how to approach friends and ask for business. I will post results after I send this out and get some feedback!
