Late last year I was asked to join the faculty for AMA’s (American Marketing Association) Digital Marketing Bootcamps leading the SEO breakout sessions. They will be held around the country in 2019 in Nashville (March), Seattle (June), and Austin (October).

These bootcamps are designed to help marketers prepare for the Professional Certified Marketer exam in Digital Marketing as well as keeping up with the latest trends. AMA has done a great job putting together an event that is structured to help the attendees dive deeper into areas such as Digital Strategy (UI/UX), Email, Social Media, Integrated Digital Media, Analytics, and of course SEO.

SEO Quiz: How Up-To-Date Is Your SEO Knowledge?

As part of the promotion for the Bootcamps, the speakers put together an online quiz to assess how up-to-date marketers are. I thought it would be fun to include my SEO quiz questions here and put you up to the challenge – is your SEO knowledge up to snuff? Below are the 4 quiz questions:

1. What is a common best practice when optimizing for Mobile SEO?
a. Write significantly shorter content on your blog posts
b. Ensure your mobile pages contain pinch to zoom functionality
c. Ensure your mobile pages load quickly
d. Put multiple CTA buttons on your mobile pages to give users several options

Answer: c (Ensure your mobile pages load quickly )
Mobile site speed is key to success. In fact, 53% of mobile site visits leave a page that takes longer than 3 seconds to load. Google knows users get frustrated with content that renders too slowly, so they will favor websites that are fast, light and responsive.

2. Which important factor do search engines use to evaluate and determine which sites will perform and rank highest in the SERPS (search engines results pages) for a given keyword?
a. Content that comes from bigger brands will always perform better
b. If the brand is also paying for PPC ads
c. The primary keyword frequency and repetitive usage in a given amount of text
d. Which result provides the most useful answer and the best user experience

Answer: d (Which result provides the most useful answer and the best user experience)
According to Google, Algorithms analyze hundreds of different factors to try to surface the best information the web can offer, from the freshness of the content to whether the page has a good user experience. If other prominent websites on the subject link to the page, that’s a good sign the information is high quality. Above all, Google wants to provide users with the best answer, and there are many different factors that go into that.

3. Which of the following statements about Structured Data is FALSE?
a. Your site can get penalized for manipulating the use of structured data
b. You’ll quickly move up google rankings once you implement structured markup on your site
c. Implementing structured data can help improve your CTRs (click-through rates) from the SERPS
d. Structured data helps Google by providing explicit clues about the meaning of a page

Answer: b (You’ll quickly move up google rankings once you implement structured markup on your site )
Google representatives have come out and said that although structured data, by itself, does not give you a ranking boost, it can help Google understand your content and thus help you rank in Google. You are not guaranteed to get a ranking boost solely – or quickly – just because you have structured data on the page.

4. Which of the following is considered an SEO best practice?
a. Optimize your content for search engines first, users second
b. Use robots.txt to block sensitive or confidential material from showing up in the search engines
c. Make sure every page has a descriptive title tag and meta description to help show Google how your pages are relevant to users
d. Add all variations of your keywords to your meta keyword tags on every page

Answer: c (Make sure every page has a descriptive title tag and meta description to help show Google how your pages are relevant to users)
Writing descriptive, concise, engaging keyword-friendly title tags and meta descriptions for every page on your site (or at least your most important pages) has been a foundational SEO best practice for a long time and continues to be today.
