Making Time for SEO

If you’re too busy to read this article, then this article is for you. (yes, you)

I had an epiphany the other day.

It’s a disservice to train my clients about SEO without reinforcing this one thing. This tiny little thing that can make or break SEO results.

Time.

Why? SEO takes time.

I’m not just talking about how long it takes for your pages to show up in the SERPs once they’ve been optimized. I mean the time it takes you to actually do SEO. You see, you don’t find the time for SEO; you make the time for SEO. Believe you me, I only know a handful of people who willingly jump into SEO tasks because they love it. Executing on SEO activities takes discipline and a space built out on your calendar. We’ll never see positive SEO results if I can’t help my clients clear time on a one-time basis and ongoing nature.

It’s a complete disservice to my clients if I can’t help them address this. So besides discussing the obvious like cutting down on useless meetings, personal Internet surfing, and chatting with coworkers and friends, let’s go beyond that.

Here are just a few of the biggest time wasters for marketers:

  • A time waster is anything that distracts you from your purpose. Instant messaging, email addiction and checking it every 5 minutes, and endless “reply all” conversations that could’ve been solved much quicker with a quick phone call or conference call. A failure to plan and not having a task management system (I have used Trello and Asana and like both – and they’re free!) is a time waster. Oh – and this is a biggie: not taking advantage of shorter time gaps between meetings, like 20 minutes here and there. Most people don’t do anything productive in that gap.
  • This Forbes article hits the nail on the head – social media for marketers can be a big time suck if you fail to pick a focus for your social efforts. Spreading yourself thin is a quick way to get nowhere fast. You also have to be weary of using too many tools. Are you guilty of this? We marketers love our fun tools, but you have to be cognizant if it’s actually helping you be productive or wasting more time than doing something the manual way.
  • For my social media fans, here are a few tips I can see being very actionable: don’t mindlessly scroll through feeds as if you were a consumer; that’s wildly impractical for marketers. Create Twitter lists, and divide and conquer your feed, set a timer, and make sure to “leave traces behind.” Meaning don’t be a passive observer but jump into the conversation.

Do you see anything in here that could help you? Remember – SEO isn’t a one-time thing; you have to make time for SEO in order to realize results. Time is our biggest resource, are you using your time wisely?
