The Best Way to Track Your Monthly SEO Activities

How are you tracking your SEO activities?

Oh, you’re not?

No judgment here.

If you are like me 5 years ago, or like most of my clients when they come to me, they randomly do SEO activities when they think of it and then their efforts disappear into thin air as it’s never “written out” for anyone to see (let alone projected out).

There is no real tracking of what they do when they do it. And for my marketing manager clients who report their activities to someone, they often forget to report what activities they’ve done that have contributed to SEO.

If this resonates, then I have the solution for you: the Marketing Communications Calendar, aka the “Marcomm.”

Using a Marcomm to track your activities gives you so many benefits:

  • You can plot in future activities. This allows you to breathe a sigh of relief knowing that you’ll be working on search engine optimization consistently without killing yourself all at once
  • You’ll be reminded what monthly activities contribute to improved SEO over time  – analytics measurement (actionable insight involved), blogging, outreach, tweaking existing core pages, creating new website pages, content strategy optimization, keyword research, social media, etc.
  • You can see what other marketing activities you’re doing that might lend themselves well to SEO repurposing – blogging, social media, PR, email marketing, paid SEM, etc.
  • You can look back at the end of the year to remind yourself what you did when, and plan out the following year to get even better
  • Looking back on your activities will act as encouragement and a pat on the back to keep the SEO action items going (pair this with analytics and measurement tracking and you’re unstoppable!)

SEO is very out of sight/out of mind for many professionals.  If you touch on any of these marketing activities, you very well may be contributing to SEO and you should certainly be tracking and reporting on it: content strategy and creation, blogging, website design and technical improvements, social media marketing, community building, referral partner outreach, and PR.

Whether you love the Marcomm idea or hate it, I encourage you regardless to start tracking your SEO and online marketing activities. I promise: a little tracking will go a long way.

  • Jenny, I love that you’re using a a spreadsheet — it’s one of my favorite tools. The beauty of a spreadsheet is you can have tabs for details and it’s only one file.

Thanks, Nica! And you’re right – love having one file with multiple tabs for keeping info and data in a singular place. Hope you’re well!
