Sick and Tired of SEO Content Creation? 5 SEO Factors to Focus on Besides Content

Sick of SEO Content Creation? 5 SEO Factors to Focus on InsteadContent creation. Do you love it just as much as I do?

Wait…you DON’T?!?!

Well, what if I told you that you can improve SEO without blogging every day of your life? If you would like to either take a break from blogging or are wondering what else you can do to improve SEO, then this post is for you.

As a content lover – let’s clarify that to say quality content  – but more importantly an SEO professional who recognizes many businesses can’t spit out quality content on a regular basis, I’m here to tell you there’s more to good SEO than endless content creation.

Here are 5 impactful things you can do to improve SEO that don’t involve creating new content:

1. Improve the ranking of keywords on Page 2 and 3: In Google Analytics (synced with Google Webmaster Tools), take a look at the Queries report and filter it so you can see what keywords you have on page 2 or 3. Google each keyword, see what piece of content comes up, and see if you can tweak it to move it up the rankings by:

  1. Improving SEO copywriting elements on the page
  2. Adding links to other content pointing to that page

2. Optimize existing content: Take an un-optimized blog post or piece of content and: 1) Identify a target keyword for the piece using google’s free keyword research tool and 2) Sprinkle that keyword in judiciously on the page in the right places: title tag, meta description, H1, H2, body copy, alt tag, and image file name

3. Improve the page speed: Take a look what’s slowing down your page, or better yet, pageS plural. Analyze your page speed here, and if it’s over 3 seconds then pony up to improve that. Here’s a great guide to give you some ideas and get you started.

4. Reduce the number of pages you’re targeting the same keyword for:
If you’re like most of my clients, you’re trying to target the same keyword on almost every single page. Rookie mistake and big missed opportunity. Identify the page that should rank for that term by:

  1. Do a site command with your site and a keyword in quotes. This will pull up all the similar pages on your site that have to do with that topic and keyword. The page you really want for that keyword should come up #1. To finish out this task:
    • These other pages represent a great internal linking opportunity so link to the page you want to rank from these pages
    • Consolidate content to have a mega beefed-up awesome page (and redirect the old pages)

5. Improve your CTR: And lastly, one of my faves, if you’re getting a decent ranking for a keyword but no one is clicking on your result (you can see this through the same filtered report you pull up in Google Analytics synced with Google Webmaster Tools), then look at improving the title tag and meta description to make them more alluring and entice clicks. Perhaps you don’t have a ranking issue – you are just boring people with bland titles and descriptions.

Now, these things are simple, but they won’t magically happen. Each of these factors takes a little sweat, effort and work to implement. But if you’re serious about SEO, then give one a try today. And drop a few additional ideas to improve SEO without creating more content in the comments below. Happy SEO’ing!
